Drums - Why Learn To Play?

Playing drums is one of the most fun and exciting instruments to play! Sure, playing guitar is pretty cool and you get to be out front soaking up the crowd, playing bass is ok, playing keyboards is bit naff (lets be honest), and being the front man gets you all the attention.

But what about drums? Well, feeling the groove and getting into your element is the absolute best! There is something primal about hitting something and it making a sound. Hundreds of years ago, tribes people used to play very primitive versions of this instrument. It was mainly used in rituals where they would dance and try to enter a trance like state, often to connect with what they believed to be spirits.

These days the instrument is really only used for music. And to be quite honest, there has never been a better time to play a kit as it is pretty much the centre of all pop music these days. With urban music, rock, and dance music all being super popular, the kit has found itself in a dominating role.

Being the person at the centre of a band, being the one who is setting the feel and groove of the song is a powerful feeling. Everyone is relying on you to keep the ship steady and keep it moving in the right direction. If you messed up then it's likely that everything will just fall apart. So, there is a lot of responsibility involved too.

It is quite cheap to get started drumming, you really only need some sticks to begin practicing on an old magazine or something similar. You will need a set of drums at some point in the future, but you can work your way up to that. When you begin lessons, you will be playing on your teachers kit.

Hopefully this gives you a few good reasons to get into playing this great instrument. It will take some time to get really good at it, but if you practice for at least thirty minutes each and every day, you will soon find yourself progressing faster than you may have thought you would. Good luck!
